What are the precautions for paint can recycling?
Apr 15, 2026
1. Key Preparations Before Recycling
Confirm Complete Cooling: The can surface should feel cool. Ideally, let it stand in a cool, ventilated place for at least 30 minutes to avoid affecting the assessment of internal pressure due to thermal expansion and contraction.
Verify Thorough Emptying: For spray paint cans: Invert and press until no liquid sprays out, shake silently, and let stand for 24 hours without gas leakage.
For industrial drums: Visually inspect for liquid accumulation, scrape to remove a wet film, and tilt to remove dripping.
Do Not Heate or Incinerate: Even after the can has cooled, residual solvent may still cause an explosion if exposed to an open flame.
2. Cleaning and Handling Requirements
Clean Inner Wall Residue: For water-based paint residue: Scrub with warm water and detergent to ensure no sticky substances remain.
For oil-based paint residue: Clean with a small amount of banana oil or alcohol. Waste liquid must be sealed and disposed of by a professional.
Drying Treatment: After cleaning, invert and air dry for at least 48 hours to ensure no moisture or volatile odor remains. 3. **Separate Components: Remove components made of different materials, such as plastic seals and metal handles, and sort them accordingly.
3. Correct Classification and Recycling Channels:
Spray Paint Cans (Aerosol Cans): Even empty cans are considered hazardous waste or recyclable metal and should be disposed of in red hazardous waste containers or metal recycling bins.
If supported by local regulations, they can be taken to designated hazardous waste recycling points or participate in the brand's original manufacturer's recycling program (e.g., Dulux).
Industrial/Household Paint Buckets:
Thoroughly Cleaned Metal Buckets: Can be recycled; contact a reputable waste recycling center for disposal.
Uncleaned or Residual Buckets: Classified as hazardous waste (HW49) and must be disposed of by a licensed hazardous waste management unit.
4. Safety and Compliance Reminders:
❌ Do not crush, cut, or puncture paint cans unless using specialized tools and wearing protective equipment.
❌ Selling waste containers to unlicensed small workshops is prohibited. Illegally disposing of more than 3 tons constitutes a crime of environmental pollution.
✅ Retain disposal receipts: When disposing of waste in bulk, fill out a hazardous waste transfer manifest in accordance with the law to ensure full traceability.
