What to do if a paint can is damaged?

Jul 28, 2025

1. Emergency treatment for minor damage
If the paint can is only slightly damaged, such as a small crack or a small hole, you can try the following methods:
Cleaning the damaged area: First clean the paint, rust and oil stains around the damaged area.
Using cold welding repair glue: Prepare cold welding repair glue, such as XR-051 cold welding repair glue, whose formula includes bisphenol A epoxy resin, bisphenol F epoxy resin, ethyl cyanoacrylate and silica powder. Apply the prepared cold welding repair glue evenly to the damaged area, fill it first and then apply it to avoid bubbles in the glue layer.
Curing and grinding: After waiting for the cold welding repair glue to cure, grind off the excess glue to keep the surface flat.
2. Treatment when the damage is serious
If the damage is more serious, such as large cracks or deformation of the can body, it is recommended to take the following measures:
Transferring the remaining paint: If there is still remaining paint in the can, the paint should be transferred to other intact containers as soon as possible to avoid leakage.
Professional repair or replacement: For severely damaged paint cans, it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel for repair, or directly replace with new paint cans.
3. Safe and environmentally friendly treatment
Prevent leakage: During the treatment process, paint leakage should be prevented to avoid pollution to the environment. If the paint has leaked, it should be adsorbed with oil-absorbing cotton or oil-absorbing felt, and the adsorbed paint should be collected and transported to the hazardous waste storage area.
Waste treatment: Broken paint cans are hazardous wastes and should be handled in accordance with the requirements of the local environmental protection department. They usually need to be handed over to professional hazardous waste treatment agencies for recycling or destruction.
4. Preventive measures
Regular inspection: Regularly check the integrity and sealing of the paint cans to detect and deal with potential problems in a timely manner.
Proper storage: Make sure the paint cans are stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated environment, avoiding high temperature, humidity and direct sunlight.
