How to Safely Handle Paint Can Leaks

May 06, 2026

I. Immediate Safety Measures

1. Ventilation and Fire Prevention
Quickly move the leaking paint can to a well-ventilated area away from heat sources. Turn off nearby electrical equipment. Do not smoke or use open flames to prevent volatile organic compounds (such as benzene and toluene) from igniting or exploding upon contact with sparks.

2. Personal Protective Equipment
Wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and a respirator (A2B2E2K2-P3 filter cartridge recommended) during handling. Avoid skin contact or inhalation of harmful vapors.

II. Handling Based on Leakage Level

1. Minor Leaks (Surface Oil Stains Only)

Steps: Wipe the leaked area with absorbent cotton or a dry cloth to remove residual paint.

Place plastic wrap over the cap and tighten it again to enhance the seal.

Aftercare Recommendations: Use within a short period; avoid long-term storage.

2. Moderate Leak (Slow Dripping)

Procedure: Use absorbent cotton to contain the leak line, creating a "V"-shaped containment zone to prevent further spread.

Move the can to a leak-proof tray to prevent ground contamination.

Seal the crack with oil-resistant sealant (such as epoxy resin) and reinforce it with external reinforcing sheets.

Note: This repair is for short-term use only. Storage of flammable solvent-based paints is not recommended.

3. Severe Leak (Continuous Flow or Damaged Can)

Procedure: Immediately stop use and transfer any remaining paint to a compliant leak-proof container.

Cover the leak area with absorbent granules or sawdust, allow it to stand for 30 minutes, then clean it up, bag it, and dispose of it as hazardous waste.

Label the original can with "Hazardous Waste" and hand it over to a professional recycling agency.

Prohibited Actions: Do not incinerate, drill holes in, or discard the paint indiscriminately, especially since spray paint cans pose an explosion risk and must be handled by a professional unit.

III. Cleaning and Pollution Reduction at the Leakage Site

1. Ground Cleaning: First, absorb the residual liquid with sawdust or sand, then scrub with a 5% surfactant solution. Collect wastewater in a dedicated container; do not discharge directly into the sewer system.

2. Odor Elimination: Spray a bio-enzyme deodorizer (50mL/m²) to reduce the concentration of harmful gases. After 30 minutes, check if the PID reading is below 100ppm.

IV. Prevention of Recurrence

1. Use thickened screw-top cans with rubber sealing rings and double-layer rolled edges (such as the Metasequoia series).

2. Store the cans upside down to utilize the self-sealing effect of the paint.

3. Regularly check the condition of the cans and avoid high temperatures, direct sunlight, or violent impacts.

⚠️ If the leaked material contains highly toxic substances such as benzene or halogenated hydrocarbons, or has entered the rainwater drainage network or soil, immediately contact the Ecological and Environmental Protection Bureau or 119 for professional handling to prevent secondary pollution.
