How to Determine the Severity of Paint Leakage from a Paint Can
May 04, 2026
I. Minor Leakage: Slow seepage, no dripping
Characteristics: Slight oil stains or color marks at the seams or lid opening, but no obvious dripping.
After standing, a paper towel test shows only slight dampness at the edges, with no obvious staining.
Risk Level: Low
Common Causes: Aging sealing ring, loose lid, slight deformation during transportation.
Remedies: Clean and retighten. Adding plastic wrap to the lid opening can enhance the seal.
Use within a short period; avoid long-term storage.
✅ Suitable for home users to handle themselves; does not affect short-term use.
II. Moderate Leakage: Slow dripping, visible liquid accumulation
Characteristics: Continuous oil dripping from the leak point, forming a small area of liquid accumulation at the bottom.
Several drops to one drop per hour; significant paint loss can be observed within 24 hours.
Risk Level: Medium
Common Causes: Micro-cracks in the can, incomplete welds, localized embrittlement and cracking of the plastic can.
Handling Recommendations: Immediately transfer to a leak-proof tray to avoid environmental contamination.
Seal the leak with an oil-resistant sealant (such as epoxy) and reinforce with an external reinforcing sheet.
After repair, use only for a short period; storage of highly volatile solvent-based paints is not recommended.
⚠️ There is a risk of contamination and waste; immediate action is required.
III. Severe Leakage: Continuous Flowing or Jetting Leakage
Characteristics: Paint flows continuously in a thin stream, with a large amount lost in a short time.
The can is visibly deformed, bulging, or perforated, or the spray paint can leaks air accompanied by a hissing sound.
Risk Level: High
Common Causes: Corrosion and perforation of the metal can, cracking of the plastic can, structural failure of the pressurized tank.
Handling Recommendations:
Immediately stop using the product and safely transfer any remaining paint to a compliant container.
The original can must be disposed of as hazardous waste and must not be discarded indiscriminately.
Self-spraying paint cans must not be repaired by the user and should be handed over to a professional recycling organization.
❌ Continued use is strictly prohibited and poses a fire, explosion, or environmental pollution hazard.
