How to Open a Paint Can

I. Opening Methods for Different Can Types
1. Clip-on Metal Cans
Operation: Insert a flathead screwdriver into the edge of the lid and gently pry it open at multiple points along the circumference. Do not pry it open completely at once; after prying it open halfway, bend the lid to a 45-degree angle.
Key Point: Do not break the sealing rubber gasket inside the lid, as this will prevent the can from sealing properly and storing remaining paint.
2. Plastic Pull-tab Cans
Operation: Simply pull the tab upwards. If the tab breaks, you can break the edge sealing strip or cut an opening along the edge.
3. Screw-top Cans
Operation: Hold the lid and rotate it counterclockwise. If the lid is too tight, wear rubber gloves to increase friction.
4. Dedicated Can Opener
Operation: Place the can opener against the edge of the lid and use leverage to easily pry it open. This is the most effortless and least damaging solution for cans, suitable for various metal and plastic paint cans from 250ml to 25L.
II. Techniques for Loosening Overly Tight Caps
1. Softening with Heat: Soak the edge of the cap in hot water (around 60℃) for 2 minutes, or use a hairdryer to blow hot air onto the edge of the cap for 30 seconds to soften the sealing strip before opening.
2. Loosening by Tapping: Gently tap along the edge of the cap with a hammer to gradually loosen the seal. Using a tool to pry it open will then be easier.
III. Safety Precautions
1. Wear protective gloves at all times, and goggles if necessary, to avoid paint splashes on skin or eyes.
2. Keep the work area well-ventilated and away from open flames to prevent the accumulation of flammable gases from paint evaporation.
3. Before opening, place the paint can on a stable surface and apply even pressure to prevent tipping and spillage.
4. After opening, let it stand for a moment to release any pressure buildup inside the can, reducing the risk of paint splashing.
