How to Determine if a Paint Can Needs to be Depressurized

I. Can Appearance and Condition Assessment

1. Bulging/Deformation: A noticeable outward bulge in the can body or a slight upward tilt of the lid indicates that the internal pressure is higher than normal and must be allowed to depressurize.

2. Unusual Noise Before Opening: A distinct gurgling sound of gas moving inside the can after gently shaking it, or a springy rebound when pressing the lid, suggests excess internal pressure.

3. Long-Term Unopened: Sealed paint cans that have been stored unopened for more than 3 months, especially those subjected to temperature changes, are prone to accumulating volatile gases. They must be allowed to depressurize before opening.

II. Storage Environment Assessment

1. High-Temperature Exposure: If the can has been placed in direct sunlight, near a heat source, or in an environment with temperatures exceeding 30°C, the solvent inside will evaporate significantly, greatly increasing the internal pressure. Depressurization is necessary.

2. Experienced severe shaking: If the can has undergone long-distance transportation, been violently shaken, or tipped over, the gas and liquid inside will mix, creating a high-pressure state. Before opening, it must be allowed to stand to allow the gas and liquid to separate and release pressure.

3. Significant temperature fluctuations: If the can is suddenly transferred from a low-temperature environment to a high-temperature environment, the internal pressure will rise rapidly with the temperature. It must be allowed to stand until the can temperature equalizes with the ambient temperature before opening.

III. Judging Paint Type and Can Type Characteristics

1. Spray paint/aerosol cans: These cans are inherently pressurized. If the storage temperature exceeds 25℃, they must be allowed to stand for 5-10 minutes to release pressure before opening to avoid high-pressure spraying.

2. Highly volatile paints: Nitrocellulose lacquer and fast-drying paints with high thinner content tend to accumulate large amounts of volatile gases inside the can. Before opening, it must be allowed to stand to release pressure.

3. Pressurized cans: Industrial paint pressure cans may not have completely released residual pressure after operation. Before opening again, it must be confirmed that the pressure is zero, and the can must be allowed to stand to release pressure before operation.
