How long after sterilizing an olive oil can?
Oct 01, 2025
1. Air Drying
After sterilizing, the can must be thoroughly air-dried (it's recommended to drain it upside down for 2-3 hours) to prevent residual moisture from diluting the olive oil or breeding bacteria.
2. Chemical Disinfectant Residue Treatment
If a chlorine-containing disinfectant (such as 84 disinfectant) is used, rinse with clean water at least three times to ensure no residue remains before use.
After sterilizing with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, it's recommended to ventilate the container for 30 minutes to an hour to allow the volatile components to dissipate.
3. Cooling Time for High-Temperature Sterilization
Glass jars sterilized with boiling water or steam must be cooled to room temperature (approximately 1 hour) before filling with olive oil to prevent temperature fluctuations that could cause the glass to crack.
4. General Recommendations
After sterilization, it's recommended to wait 2-4 hours (depending on the sterilization method) to ensure the container is completely dry and free of chemical residue before use.
