How to Disinfect an Olive Oil Can After Cleaning

Sep 29, 2025

1. Basic Cleaning
After cleaning, thoroughly rinse the oil tank with hot water and dishwashing liquid to remove any residual oil. If stubborn oil stains persist, scrub with a brush to ensure no oil film remains on the inner wall.
2. Chemical Disinfection
Chlorine-Containing Disinfectant: Dilute 84 disinfectant solution and soak the oil tank for 10-30 minutes to kill bacteria and viruses. Rinse with clean water several times until no residue remains.
Alcohol Disinfection: 75% ethanol can be used to wipe or soak the inner wall of the oil tank for approximately 5 minutes without the need for a second rinse.
Hydrogen Peroxide Disinfection: Soak in a 3-5% food-grade hydrogen peroxide solution for 30 minutes to effectively inactivate microorganisms. This method is suitable for applications with high chemical residue requirements.
3. Physical Disinfection
High-Temperature Steam Disinfection: If the oil tank is heat-resistant (such as glass), it can be sterilized by boiling in water for 10 minutes or using steam. UV disinfection: Suitable for surface disinfection, but ensure that the light reaches all areas of the tank.

4. Drying and Storage
After disinfection, allow the tank to dry thoroughly to prevent moisture from breeding bacteria. It is recommended to invert the tank to drain and store in a cool, dark place.
