Is Small Round Metal Can suitable for long-term food storage?

1. Suitable for long-term storage
Material is safe and corrosion-resistant
High-quality small round metal cans are usually made of tinplate (tinplate) or aluminum alloy, and the inner wall is often coated with food-grade coating (such as epoxy resin) to avoid direct contact between metal and food, prevent rust and heavy metal migration. For example, traditional meat cans and bean cans use similar processes and can be safely stored for 2-5 years or even longer. Suitable for storing highly acidic foods (such as ketchup, canned fruit) or oil-soaked foods (such as canned tuna) because the coating can effectively isolate corrosive substances.
Strong sealing and light-proof
Metal cans are completely sealed through the crimping process to form a "vacuum environment" that can block oxygen, moisture, microorganisms and external pollution. Suitable for storing dry goods that need to be moisture-proof and anti-oxidation, such as rice, flour, grains, etc. (need to be combined with desiccant), or flavor-sensitive foods such as coffee beans and tea. The light-proof property can also delay oil oxidation and extend the shelf life of nuts and baked goods.
Stable content
If the food itself has been sterilized (such as canned food), or is a high-osmotic pressure food with low moisture, high salt and sugar (such as honey, pickled products), it can be stored for a long time with the sealing of metal cans. For example, unopened canned condensed milk can be stored in a cool place for 1-2 years, and homemade candied preserved fruits can be stored for several months without deterioration after being put into sterilized metal cans.
2. Situations not suitable for long-term storage
High-moisture or perishable food
Unsterilized fresh vegetables, meat, dairy products, etc., even if they are put into metal cans, may rot due to the reproduction of residual microorganisms. Storage at room temperature for more than 24 hours may cause food safety risks and need to be refrigerated or eaten as soon as possible.
Strong acidity and damaged coating
If the coating on the inner wall of the metal can falls off (such as bumps and rust), acidic foods (such as lemon juice and vinegar-pickled foods) may react directly with the metal, causing the contents to deteriorate or metal precipitation. In such cases, long-term storage should be avoided. It is recommended to choose glass jars or food-grade plastic containers.
Poor storage environment
Metal cans exposed to high temperature (such as next to the kitchen stove), humidity (such as the basement) or direct sunlight for a long time may cause the can to rust, seal failure, and affect food safety. Ideal storage conditions are a cool, dry, ventilated place with a temperature not exceeding 25°C and a humidity below 60%.
3. Usage suggestions
Choose regular products: give priority to purchasing metal cans with food contact safety certification (such as FDA, GB 4806) to avoid harmful substances from inferior metals.
Pre-processed food: When storing homemade, ensure that the food is completely cooled and dried, sterilize if necessary (such as boiling water to sterilize the can), or use a deoxidizer to enhance the preservation effect.
Mark the date and check regularly: record the storage time and eat as soon as possible after opening; if the can is found to be bulging, deformed, or the contents have an odor, it must be discarded immediately.
