How to safely dispose of discarded paint cans?
Nov 14, 2025
1. Residue Disposal
Gas Exhaust
For spray paint cans (such as model spray cans), press the nozzle in a well-ventilated area until the gas is exhausted and absorb any remaining liquid with a paper towel.
Liquid Curing
For standard paint cans, pour out any remaining paint or allow it to air dry. Avoid discarding uncured liquid.
2. Classification and Disposal
Hazardous Waste: Empty cans contaminated with paint (including ink, pigment, etc.) should be placed in a red hazardous waste bin and managed as HW49 hazardous waste.
Recyclables: Thoroughly cleaned metal cans can be recycled, but ensure no residue remains.
3. Special Scenario Handling
Industrial Waste Cans: Companies must entrust a hazardous waste-qualified unit to dispose of the cans and report to the environmental protection department.
Construction Waste Mixture: Cans contaminated with paint must be sorted as hazardous waste and not landfilled directly.
4. Safety Precautions
Wear gloves and a mask when handling to avoid skin contact or inhalation of volatile gases. Do not use open flames to prevent residual solvents from causing explosions.
