How to prevent stainless steel olive oil cans from developing an odor?

1. Clean promptly after use to avoid grease residue. Empty the remaining oil as soon as possible after each use. Do not leave olive oil in the container for extended periods, as this can cause oxidation and a rancid smell.
Immediately wash the inside of the container with warm water and a neutral detergent, paying special attention to cleaning the threads of the bottle neck and the sealing ring of the cap.
2. Dry thoroughly to prevent moisture from causing odors. After washing, be sure to wipe dry with a lint-free cloth or invert to air dry for at least 2 hours, ensuring no moisture remains.
Damp environments easily lead to the growth of microorganisms, causing a musty or rancid smell.
3. Store properly, away from high temperatures and sunlight. Place empty or filled containers in a cool, dark place, away from stoves, sunny windowsills, and other high-temperature areas.
High temperatures accelerate the oxidation reaction of greases; for every 10°C increase, the oxidation rate approximately doubles.
4. Regular Deep Cleaning and Odor Removal: Perform a deep cleaning once a month: use a baking soda and white vinegar foam reaction for cleaning, or boil lemon slices in water to remove odors and scale.
After cleaning, place dry coffee grounds or activated charcoal packets inside, seal, and let stand for 24 hours to absorb potential odor molecules.
5. Enhance Sealing and Prevent Air Pollution: Check the sealing ring for aging or deformation; replace with a new one if necessary.
Apply a small amount of food-grade silicone grease to the threads to improve sealing and prevent oxidation from air entering.
6. Avoid Cross-Contamination: Do not use containers that have held other oils (such as spice oils or used frying oils) to directly store olive oil.
Use a dedicated funnel when dispensing to reduce the introduction of external impurities.
✅ Daily Tip: When not in use for a long time, place a dry tea leaf or a small packet of silica gel desiccant inside the container to continuously absorb moisture and prevent odors; remove before use.
