How to Inspect Paint Can Thickness to Standard

Jul 29, 2026

I. Common Non-Destructive Testing Methods

1. Magnetic/Eddy Current Thickness Gauge Method
Applicable Scenarios: Paint cans made of metal such as tinplate and stainless steel
Operating Points: Before measurement, calibrate the instrument with a standard plate. Take 3-5 measurements at key locations such as the can body, bottom, and weld perimeter, and average the results. Avoid edges and corners. Directly read the wall thickness value and compare it with the standard value.

2. Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge Method
Applicable Scenarios: Paint cans made of all materials such as metal and plastic
Operating Points: Apply coupling agent to the probe and can surface. Place the probe perpendicular to the can wall and directly read the thickness value. This method can accurately detect the true wall thickness of the can without any damage.

II. Destructive Precision Verification Methods

1. Micrometer Measurement Method
Operating Points: First, calibrate the micrometer to zero. Mark the measurement point on the can body. Directly clamp and measure the wall thickness of that area. Take multiple measurements at the same location and average the results. The accuracy can reach 2μm, suitable for sampling arbitration testing. 2. Cross-sectional Microscopy Method
Operational Points: Cut a small sample from the tank, polish the cross-section, and place it under a microscope with a scale to directly read the cross-sectional thickness. The accuracy can reach 0.1μm, making it a laboratory-arbitration-grade testing method.

III. Compliance Judgment Points
According to the national standards for packaging of the corresponding material, the average value of the measured points must be ≥ the specified minimum wall thickness. The thickness deviation of local measured points must not exceed the standard's allowable negative deviation range. If all key points pass the test, the tank thickness can be determined to meet the standard.
