Genuine tin: Silvery-white surface with a slight yellow tinge, polished to a mirror shine, with fine, delicate machining marks.
Counterfeit tin: Grayish-black or grayish-blue in color, overly white or dull surface, rough texture.
II. Listen to the sound
Genuine tin: Lightly brush the can with your fingernail; it produces a clear sound with a brief echo (the "sounding tin" characteristic).
Counterfeit tin: The sound is muffled or has no echo; the higher the lead content, the duller the sound.
III. Weigh it
Genuine tin: Density 7.3g/cm³, moderate weight for the same volume (not less than 260 grams), feels solid.
Counterfeit tin: Increased density due to lead adulteration, significantly heavier for the same volume.
IV. Test the material
Density comparison: Genuine tin has a lower density, counterfeit tin (lead-adulterated) has a higher density, resulting in a significant weight difference for the same volume.
Sampling and Restoration: Genuine tin, after melting and cooling, exhibits a fish-scale pattern and produces a clear "ding" sound when lightly dropped on the ground; counterfeit tin lacks this characteristic.
V. Other Auxiliary Methods
Smell: Genuine tin is odorless, while counterfeit tin may have a pungent chemical odor.
Examine Craftsmanship: High-purity tin (99.9%) is soft and exhibits fine hand-carving; low-purity tin (below 97%) is hard and shows obvious mechanical carving but poor sealing.
VI. Avoiding Pitfalls:
Beware of "collector's grade tin cans"-80% of them may be made of lead-tin alloy to imitate pure tin.
Prioritize products with brand endorsement and professional certifications (such as purity markings and craftsman's signatures).
VII. Practical Advice:
Request a material testing report when purchasing to confirm the tin content (international standard 97%-98%).
Avoid purchasing tin cans that are too cheap and lack brand markings to reduce the risk of adulteration.
