How to determine if a paint can is durable

Step 1: Check the material strength to determine the can's resistance to deformation.

The thickness and strength of the material directly determine its durability:

1. Metal paint cans: Press the can body with your hand. If it doesn't easily deform, the wall thickness is sufficient and the strength meets the standard. If it dents easily with a light press, the sheet material is too thin and has poor durability.

Check the welding points of the can body and handle: Smooth and firm welding without any incomplete welds or detached welds is acceptable. Rough and loose welding points indicate poor durability.

2. Plastic paint cans: Tap and listen to the sound: A dull, resonant sound indicates sufficient wall thickness and good toughness. A crisp, weak sound indicates thin walls and poor material quality, making it prone to cracking.

Bending test: Pinch the edge of the can. If it doesn't easily bend or break, it has good toughness and is durable. If it cracks easily with a light bend, the material is poor quality.

Step 2: Check the seal to prevent leakage during long-term use. Poor sealing will cause premature paint deterioration and faster can corrosion, a key indicator affecting durability:

1. Simple home test: Fill the can with water, tighten the lid, and invert it for 1-2 hours. Observe for water leakage. No leakage indicates a good seal; if water leaks from the seams or lid, it indicates poor sealing and insufficient durability.

2. More precise test: Immerse the empty can in water and slowly inflate it with air. Observe for continuous bubbles. No bubbles indicate good sealing performance and adequate durability.

3. Check the seals: For cans with sealing rings, check if the rubber ring is flat and elastic. Aged, hardened, or cracked seals will fail quickly and have poor durability.

Step 3: Verify Corrosion Resistance and Assess Long-Term Stability
Corrosion resistance directly determines the lifespan of the can. Different materials require different assessment methods:

1. Metal Cans: Check if the anti-corrosion coating on the inner wall is uniform and complete, without any missed areas, bubbles, or peeling. This indicates qualified anti-corrosion and better durability. Rough inner walls with missed areas are easily corroded and perforated by paint, resulting in poor durability.

2. Plastic Cans: Confirm the labeled material grade. Choose brand new HDPE/solvent-resistant PP material for better corrosion resistance. Cheap plastic cans made from recycled materials are easily corroded and swollen by solvents, resulting in poor durability.

3. For long-term storage of oil-based/corrosive paints, prioritize 304 stainless steel cans. Their corrosion resistance is far superior to ordinary materials, and their lifespan can reach over ten years.

Step 4: Check Structural Design and Confirm Durability Details
Detailed design also affects durability. Focus on these points:

1. Handles/Connections: A firmly welded handle connection that doesn't loosen after repeated pulling indicates durability. Loose or wobbly connections are prone to breakage.

2. Opening and Closing Structure: Repeated opening and closing of the lid should be smooth and without jamming. No stripping of the clips/threads indicates a durable structure. A lid that is difficult to open and close and prone to stripping will fail after only a few uses.

3. Pressure Resistance: For large-capacity paint cans intended for long-term stacking, prioritize products that meet the pressure resistance standard of GB/T4857.4-2023. Reputable products will indicate their stacking load capacity; those meeting the standard are less prone to deformation and are more durable.
